Recreation

The state of Rhode Island owns over 45,000 acres of land – predominantly forestland – that is available for your use and enjoyment year-round. According to a survey by the Ocean State Outdoors, Rhode Islanders participate in the following forest-based recreational activities: nature watching (31%), overnight camping (17%), hiking (14%), horse-back riding (5%), off-road vehicle driving (4%), and hunting (3%). State management areas provide a natural setting for the more passive types of recreation, such as hunting, fishing, and nature study, but private land can also be used for a variety of other activities.
